Is gossip so important to female friendships?

The answer to this question might not be so obvious at first. Gossip is often a sensitive topic because it can seem like an attack or criticism of the other person, but in reality, gossiping with your friends plays into one of women’s most basic needs: socialization. It’s how we stay connected and keep up-to-date on what’s happening in the world. If you don’t have friends or are new to a city, it can be way more difficult to socialize and stay connected with others who share your interests and worldview.

Gossip is also an effective tool for building relationships; when we gossip about someone else, it creates intimacy between the people doing the gossiping.

In many ways, it’s a form of flattery.
